What Our Patients Say

Periodontal Treatment You Can Trust

Gum disease (periodontitis) is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults — and most people who have it do not realize it. Bleeding while brushing, gum recession, persistent bad breath, or shifting teeth are all early warning signs that need attention.

Louis B. Sachs D.D.S. has treated gum disease for Southern Maryland patients for over three decades. Most early and moderate cases are fully managed in our office without surgery.

Signs You May Have Gum Disease

Gum disease is often painless in its early stages. Common warning signs include:

  • Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing
  • Red, tender, or swollen gums
  • Receding gums or teeth that look longer
  • Persistent bad breath or a bad taste
  • Loose or shifting teeth
  • Pain when chewing
If any of these sound familiar, schedule an evaluation. Caught early, gum disease is highly treatable.

How Periodontal Treatment Works

Most cases are managed with a careful, conservative protocol:

  1. Evaluation — full periodontal exam with pocket depth measurements and X-rays.
  2. Scaling and root planing — deep cleaning that removes bacteria and tartar below the gumline. Performed under local anesthesia for comfort.
  3. Targeted antimicrobials — placed in deeper pockets when needed.
  4. Maintenance cleanings — every three to four months to keep the disease in check.
Dr. Sachs may refer to a periodontist for severe cases that benefit from surgical intervention.

Periodontal Treatment FAQs

The earliest stage (gingivitis) is fully reversible with professional cleaning and good home care. Once it progresses to periodontitis, bone loss is permanent — but the disease can be stopped and managed for the rest of your life.

Scaling and root planing is performed with local anesthesia, so the procedure itself is comfortable. Mild soreness or sensitivity for a day or two afterward is normal and easily managed.

Most cases are completed in two visits, with one half of the mouth treated at each appointment. Visits typically run 60–90 minutes.

Most dental insurance plans cover scaling and root planing when medically indicated. Contact your insurance provider for coverage specifics. We provide a clear estimate before treatment.

Research links periodontal disease to heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and pregnancy complications. Controlling gum disease is one of the simplest ways to support overall health.

Patients with treated gum disease typically need maintenance cleanings every three to four months rather than the standard six. This interval keeps bacterial levels down between visits.
